Course Description

40 hours (including a minimum of 8 hours practical training) will cover:

  • The planning and preparation necessary to the performance of works associated with basic rigging and principles thereof; 
  • The assessment and control, in the correct priority, of all occupational health and safety issues associated with basic rigging and associated equipment; 
  • Erection, dismantling and use in the construction industry of hoist and mast climbers, cantilevered crane loading platforms and industrial safety nets; 
  • Understanding all relevant obligations, requirements and responsibilities as well as concepts of the duty of care associated with basic rigging and associated equipment; 
  • The correct inspection, selection, use, maintenance and appropriate repair and alteration of rigging equipment; 
  • The performance of works associated with basic rigging in accordance with all relevant standards, legislative requirements and industry codes of practice pertinent to the area of works;
  • Bends and hitches necessary to perform rigging work.

Assessment:

Participants will be required to successfully complete a written and practical examination to be deemed competent.

A performance test will be carried out only after 80 hours of practical, on the job, experience under the supervision of a licensed person has been completed and recorded. This experience must be completed in line with a training plan which has been developed between the employer and trainee

Each of the three (3) assessments is “closed book” and requires a 100% pass mark.

Course Objectives

This course is designed to provide trainees with the structured training component that, in conjunction with sufficient verifiable practical experience, will prepare students for assessment in the prescribed occupation of basic rigging (licence code RB).

As part of this course, Work Safely at Heights is included free of charge.   Students will acheive the following competencies.

Course Prerequisites

  • Training is offered to students under the age of 18, however, in order to obtain their qualification and licence, they must be 18 years and over. For further details please contact the office.
  • Participants are advised to hold intermediate numeracy, literacy and communication skills to read and comprehend written instructions.
  • The trainee rigger needs to be able to work at height and perform physical tasks.
  • The trainee rigger must hold a current certificate of competency in Dogging. They must also be proficient in all aspects of dogging, as per the dogging assessment instrument. That is, the trainee rigger must know all the doggers formulas, know how to splice, know the hitches and bends required of a dogger and be proficient with ALL the whistle signals.
  • The trainee riggers must  wear STEEL CAP SAFETY BOOTS
  • Trainee riggers must have a basic understanding of mathematics (must be able to work out formulas for loads and safe working loads of steel wire rope, synthetic rope and chains). 

Trainee riggers must bring;

  • hard hat and safety vest.
  • Drivers Licence or Passport (required for course registration).
